Trip wires are typically used either as an early warning device or to set off an explosive. There are actual trip wires attached to devices (Like the one to the far right) and there are laser trip wires that cannot be seen with the human eye.
At The Youth Division we use trip wires for early warning only. We also learn and practice to identify and defuse trip wires. We always consider that one day one of trained Recon might become a missionary in a dangerous area and benefit from this knowledge.
What you see here is a practice device. A trip wire is attached to the trigger pin and then to a solid object (Like a tree). The device takes a .22 caliber blank round. When the wire is tripped and the pin comes out, the .22 blank fires and sounds like a fire cracker.
